Audience with the King

Captain's log Aug 31, 2020

As we still have plenty of time before we need to turn southwards again, we make use of the pleasant southerly breeze and head northwards. Threading our way through the Askoy Archipelago, we find ourselves a very nicely sheltered "pirate cove" named Uttoskavågen. These pleasant surroundings and calm weather are enough to convince us to spend the day relaxing, fixing sails and drying washing.

With high spirits we head further against a moderate breeze toward the largest of Norway's fjords, the Sognefjord. Aptly named the King of the Fjords, this huge inlet spans over 80 nm with its farthest reaches being almost 100 nm from the open sea. Bending the wind with its steep sides, it allows us to head into the mainland with a spinnaker. We reach our first refuge along this more than 1000 meter deep cut into the Land with dusk at Fagernes.

Further along the fjord we admire the impressive deep sea exploration vessel OceanXplorer on a mission to bring the unknown deeps a bit closer to us.
